When RCBC Plaza rose in 2001, Makati’s skyline, and the country itself, was at a turning point. The Philippines was emerging from the Asian Financial Crisis, and this landmark twin-tower complex, developed by RCBC Realty Corporation, became more than just an office building. It was a bold statement of resilience and ambition, helping transform the Makati CBD into the thriving financial and cultural hub we know today.

The RCBC Building
The complex comprises the 46-storey, 192-meter Yuchengco Tower and the 41-storey, 170-meter Tower 2, designed through the collaboration of global firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and local partner W.V. Coscolluela & Associates. Structural engineering was provided by Magnusson Klemencic Associates and R.S. Caparros & Associates, with construction by EEI and Walter Construction. Engineered for resilience and efficiency, RCBC Plaza holds PEZA accreditation and features high-performance floor plates, raised flooring systems, and a full curtain wall façade. In 2018, it became the first multi-tenant building in the Philippines to earn a LEED EB:OM Gold certification, thanks to sustainable upgrades such as LED lighting, water-efficient landscaping, enhanced chiller systems, and waste reduction programs, resulting in significant electricity savings and a 40% reduction in water use.
A Cultural and Civic Destination
Beyond its role as a workplace, RCBC Plaza was envisioned as a civic and cultural destination. It houses the Yuchengco Museum, the 450-seat Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, the Teresa Yuchengco Chapel, landscaped courtyards, retail outlets, wellness facilities, and banking chambers. Its open-air plaza prominently features Eduardo Castrillo’s monumental sculpture, The Spirit of EDSA, a tribute to democracy and the spirit of People Power II. The complex also hosts the Yuchengco Institute for Advanced Studies in partnership with De La Salle University and serves as a venue for various diplomatic missions—cementing its identity not only as an architectural icon but also as a hub for cultural, civic, and intellectual exchange in the heart of Makati.

Prime Location and Surrounding Landmarks
Strategically located at 6819 Ayala Avenue, at the corner of Gil Puyat Avenue (Buendia), RCBC Plaza occupies a prestigious, highly accessible site that offers both prominence and visibility. The complex sits on an “island” block bordered by Ayala Avenue to the west, Gil Puyat Avenue to the north, Geronimo Street to the east, and Salcedo Street to the south. Its immediate surroundings offer exceptional convenience, with top-tier academic institutions such as the Asian Institute of Management, Ateneo Law School, Mapúa Makati, Centro Escolar University Makati, and FEU Business School nearby. The area also boasts prominent residential towers like The Columns and Alphaland Makati Place, as well as essential facilities such as Makati Medical Center, the Makati Post Office, and the Makati Fire Station. R
etail and dining destinations like Ayala North Exchange and nearby lifestyle clusters create a dynamic blend of business, culture, and urban living.

Where Access Meets Convenience
Accessibility to RCBC Plaza is both convenient and strategic. Commuters can easily reach it on foot from major transit points: the Buendia MRT Station is approximately 1.4 km away (around a 19-minute walk), while the Ayala MRT Station is just a 6–8 minute walk. Frequent bus and jeepney routes run along Buendia and Ayala Avenues, with a direct bus from Buendia Station taking just 3 minutes. Pedestrian connectivity is further enhanced by elevated walkways like the De La Rosa Elevated Walkway, linking RCBC Plaza to Greenbelt and Glorietta in about 10–12 minutes. For motorists, the building offers a seven-level basement parking facility, levels 1 to 6 for tenants, and level 7 for visitors.

Architectural Design and Amenities
Architecturally, RCBC Plaza is a product of the collaboration between Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (New York) and W.V. Coscolluela & Associates, supported by engineering and project management teams such as Magnusson Klemencic Associates, R.S. Caparros & Associates, and Bovis Lend Lease. Its façade features a sleek curtain wall system of clear and solar-reflective glass framed by aluminum panels, anchored by a stone-clad podium. The twin towers are connected by a striking 21-meter-high glass-enclosed galleria that serves as both a visual focal point and a hub for cultural amenities. Inside, the building offers up to 91% usable floor space, ceiling heights of 2.7–2.75 meters and raised-floor provisions for flexibility. The lobbies are finished in granite and marble, with ceilings nearly eight meters high. A zoned elevator system, 39 passenger lifts in the Yuchengco Tower and similar capacity in Tower 2, ensures efficient circulation.

The podium houses a Roman Catholic chapel, health and fitness facilities, banking halls, dining options, and retail outlets. From a technical standpoint, RCBC Plaza is equipped with 14.8 MW of back-up power, a digitally monitored Building Automation System, fiber-optic connectivity, advanced chiller-type HVAC with VAV control, and comprehensive security and fire safety systems.
Professionally managed to maintain the highest Class A standards, RCBC Plaza is more than just an office complex, it is a blend of business, culture, and community. With its prime location, sustainable design, and rich mix of amenities, it stands as one of Makati’s most prestigious and enduring addresses.
